Calendly

Scheduling & Calendar

Calendly is the scheduling automation platform that eliminated the painful back-and-forth of booking meetings. Instead of exchanging five emails to find a time that works, you share a Calendly link and the other person picks an open slot. For custom web applications, Calendly's API and embeddable widgets make it straightforward to add scheduling directly into any product. Sales platforms, client portals, onboarding flows, and support systems all benefit from Calendly integration because it connects to Google Calendar, Outlook, and other calendar providers to show real-time availability without double-booking.

From Zero to Standard

Calendly was founded in 2013 in Atlanta, Georgia by Tope Awotona, a Nigerian-born entrepreneur who had previously tried and failed at three different startups. Awotona was so convinced scheduling was a solvable problem that he invested his entire life savings of roughly $200,000 into building the product, including cashing out his 401(k) retirement account. He bootstrapped the company for years without taking venture capital, growing it purely through word of mouth and the viral nature of the product itself. Every time someone received a Calendly link, they became aware of the tool. By the time Calendly raised its first outside round in 2021, it was already valued at $3 billion.

The Technical Edge

Calendly's growth was almost entirely driven by a single viral loop that cost the company nothing. When a user sends a Calendly link to schedule a meeting, the recipient sees the Calendly branding on the scheduling page. This organic exposure meant that Calendly spent almost zero dollars on marketing for its first several years. Tope Awotona has said that the company's early marketing budget was essentially zero, and yet they were adding millions of users per year purely because the product marketed itself through everyday use.
