Acuity Scheduling

Scheduling & Calendar

Acuity Scheduling is an appointment scheduling platform designed primarily for service-based businesses like consultants, salons, photographers, and coaches. Now part of the Squarespace ecosystem, Acuity stands out for its deep customization options around intake forms, payment collection at booking time, and multi-staff calendar management. For custom web application development, Acuity's API allows developers to build scheduling into client-facing portals, automate appointment workflows, and sync booking data with CRMs, invoicing systems, and internal dashboards. It handles time zone conversion, buffer times between appointments, and recurring bookings out of the box.

The Problem It Solved

Acuity Scheduling was founded in 2006 by Gavin Zuchlinski, a software developer from New York who built the product as a solo founder. Zuchlinski created Acuity initially to solve his own scheduling headaches while freelancing, then realized other small business owners faced the same problem. He grew the company as a bootstrapped, one-person operation for years, handling development, customer support, and marketing entirely by himself. The product gained a loyal following among solopreneurs and small businesses before Squarespace acquired Acuity in 2019, integrating it into their website builder ecosystem as their scheduling solution.

What Sets It Apart

Gavin Zuchlinski ran Acuity Scheduling almost entirely by himself for over a decade before the Squarespace acquisition. Even as the platform grew to serve tens of thousands of paying customers, Zuchlinski resisted hiring and kept the team extremely small. He has described the experience as one of the longest solo bootstrapping runs in SaaS history, and he personally answered customer support emails for years while simultaneously writing code and managing infrastructure. The Squarespace acquisition was notable because Acuity was already profitable and did not need to sell.
