OpenAI is the artificial intelligence research company behind GPT-4, ChatGPT, DALL-E, and the API platform that powers AI features in thousands of applications worldwide. Founded in December 2015 as a nonprofit by Sam Altman, Elon Musk, Greg Brockman, Ilya Sutskever, and others with a $1 billion commitment, OpenAI later restructured into a "capped-profit" entity and secured a massive partnership with Microsoft. OpenAI's API provides access to language models (GPT-4o, GPT-4, GPT-3.5), embedding models, image generation (DALL-E 3), text-to-speech, speech-to-text (Whisper), and vision capabilities. For custom web application development, the OpenAI API is one of the primary integration points for adding AI-powered features, text generation, summarization, classification, semantic search, and conversational interfaces.

How It Started

OpenAI's trajectory from research lab to the company that arguably kicked off the modern AI era is one of the most consequential stories in technology. The founding team's stated goal was to ensure that artificial general intelligence benefits all of humanity. The early years were focused on research: reinforcement learning breakthroughs, the Dota 2 playing bot OpenAI Five, and the first GPT paper in 2018. GPT-2, released in 2019, was notable as much for the controversy around OpenAI's decision to withhold the full model (citing concerns about misuse) as for the model itself. GPT-3 arrived in June 2020 and was the first model to demonstrate that scaling language models produced genuinely useful capabilities, writing, coding, reasoning, and translation that was good enough to build products on. But it was ChatGPT, launched on November 30, 2022, as a simple conversational interface on top of GPT-3.5, that changed everything. It reached 100 million users in two months, the fastest consumer application adoption in history. GPT-4 followed in March 2023 with dramatically improved reasoning, and GPT-4o in 2024 added native multimodal capabilities across text, vision, and audio. The developer API has become the default starting point for teams adding AI features to applications.

The Unknown Fact

What most people do not realize about OpenAI's developer platform is how much of its value comes from infrastructure beyond the base models. The Assistants API provides built-in conversation memory, file retrieval, and code execution, features that used to require building your own orchestration layer with tools like LangChain. The function calling system lets you define structured tools that the model can invoke, turning GPT-4 into an agent that can query databases, call APIs, and perform multi-step workflows. The embeddings API (text-embedding-3-small and text-embedding-3-large) powers semantic search and recommendation systems by converting text into high-dimensional vectors. The batch API lets you submit large volumes of requests at half the cost for non-time-sensitive workloads. For client projects, I use OpenAI's models for specific tasks where they excel: GPT-4o for complex reasoning and analysis, the embeddings API for building search features over unstructured data, and Whisper for transcription in meeting intelligence applications. The key is choosing the right model for each task rather than defaulting to the most powerful (and expensive) option for everything.
