Mixpanel

Analytics & Data

Mixpanel is a product analytics platform designed to help teams understand how users interact with their web and mobile applications. Unlike Google Analytics, which was originally built around pageviews and marketing attribution, Mixpanel was built from the ground up around event tracking and user behavior analysis. For custom web application development, Mixpanel excels at answering questions like which features users actually use, where they drop off in a workflow, and what behaviors correlate with retention. Its funnel analysis, retention reports, and cohort comparisons make it the go-to choice for product teams that need deeper insight than basic traffic metrics provide.

Before It Existed

Mixpanel was founded in 2009 by Suhail Doshi and Tim Trefren. Doshi was just 20 years old at the time and had dropped out of Arizona State University to pursue the idea. The company went through Y Combinator in the summer 2009 batch, where Doshi pitched the concept of analytics focused on actions rather than pageviews. The insight was that web applications were becoming more interactive, and traditional pageview-based analytics could not capture what users were actually doing within a single page. Mixpanel grew rapidly among startups and tech companies, raising over $77 million in venture capital and reaching a $865 million valuation by 2014.

What Makes It Different

Suhail Doshi started coding at age 12 and got his first programming job at 16, working on backend systems for a company while still in high school. Before founding Mixpanel, he interned at Slide, a social gaming company run by PayPal co-founder Max Levchin. It was during this internship that Doshi realized how difficult it was to get meaningful analytics about user behavior in interactive web applications. That frustration became the seed of Mixpanel. Doshi stepped down as CEO in 2018 at age 29, making him one of the youngest founders to build and then hand off a company valued at nearly a billion dollars.
