Meta (Facebook)

Social & Marketing

Meta Platforms, the parent company of Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp, and Messenger, operates the largest social media ecosystem in the world. For custom web application development, Meta's developer platform offers a wide range of APIs including Facebook Login for authentication, the Graph API for accessing user data and page management, the Marketing API for programmatic ad campaign management, and the Conversions API for server-side event tracking. Many business applications need to integrate with Meta's platforms for social login, content publishing, lead generation, ad management dashboards, and customer communication through Messenger or WhatsApp Business.

Before It Existed

Facebook was launched on February 4, 2004, by Mark Zuckerberg along with his Harvard University roommates Eduardo Saverin, Andrew McCollum, Dustin Moskovitz, and Chris Hughes. The site was initially limited to Harvard students and called "TheFacebook." It expanded to other Ivy League schools, then to all universities, and finally to the general public in September 2006. The company dropped "The" from its name early on. In October 2021, Zuckerberg announced the corporate rebrand to Meta Platforms, reflecting the company's strategic bet on the metaverse and augmented reality. The social media products retained their original names.

What Makes It Different

Before Facebook existed, Zuckerberg built a program called Facemash in October 2003 that pulled student photos from Harvard's online house directories and asked users to vote on who was more attractive. The site attracted 450 visitors and 22,000 photo views in its first four hours before Harvard's administration shut it down and Zuckerberg faced disciplinary action. While Facemash was a different product entirely, the experience taught Zuckerberg how quickly a social product could spread through a college campus. He also open-sourced React, the JavaScript library now used by millions of developers, which was originally built internally at Facebook by engineer Jordan Walke to solve the company's own UI rendering challenges.
