HubSpot is an all-in-one CRM, marketing, sales, and service platform that has become the default choice for mid-market companies that want everything under one roof. From a custom development perspective, HubSpot's API is one of the better-documented ones out there. I regularly build integrations that push form submissions, deal updates, or customer activity from custom web apps directly into HubSpot's CRM. Their webhook system, combined with custom workflow actions, means you can trigger events in a client's custom application based on what's happening inside HubSpot, and vice versa. It's particularly useful for businesses that want a custom-built front end but don't want to rebuild their entire sales pipeline from scratch.
Brian Halligan and Dharmesh Shah met as graduate students at MIT's Sloan School of Management and founded HubSpot in 2006. Their thesis was simple but powerful: traditional outbound marketing (cold calls, spam emails, interruptive ads) was dying, and businesses needed tools for "inbound marketing", attracting customers through valuable content rather than chasing them. Dharmesh actually coined the term "inbound marketing" and wrote a blog that became one of the most-read marketing blogs in the world. HubSpot started as a marketing tool, then expanded into CRM, sales, and customer service. They went public in 2014, and the stock has been on a tear ever since. In 2024, Google parent Alphabet reportedly explored acquiring HubSpot for over $30 billion.
Dharmesh Shah's personal blog, OnStartups.com, was actually more popular than HubSpot's marketing in the early days and became one of the company's most effective lead generation channels. He also wrote an internal document called the "HubSpot Culture Code" that he published on SlideShare, it went mega-viral, racking up over 5 million views, and essentially became a recruiting tool that helped HubSpot hire top talent during its growth phase. The Culture Code deck has since been viewed over 6 million times and is considered one of the most influential company culture documents in tech.
