Dropbox

Storage & Documents

Dropbox is a cloud storage and file hosting service that pioneered the concept of seamless file syncing across devices. For custom web application development, the Dropbox API enables developers to build file management features directly into applications, including uploading, downloading, sharing, and searching files stored in a user's Dropbox account. It is particularly useful when building business tools that need document storage without maintaining your own file infrastructure. The Dropbox API also supports webhooks for real-time notifications when files change, making it ideal for workflow automation and document processing pipelines.

Before It Existed

Dropbox was founded in 2007 by Drew Houston and Arash Ferdowsi, two MIT students. The legendary origin story goes like this: Houston was riding a bus from Boston to New York and realized he had forgotten his USB flash drive at home, leaving him unable to work during the four-hour ride. Frustrated by the experience, he started writing the code for Dropbox on that very bus trip. Houston applied to Y Combinator with the idea, and Paul Graham reportedly told him that the idea was so good it would be foolish not to accept him. Dropbox launched publicly in 2008 and grew explosively through a referral program that gave users extra storage for inviting friends.

What Makes It Different

Steve Jobs personally offered to acquire Dropbox in 2009, inviting Drew Houston to Apple's headquarters in Cupertino. When Houston declined the acquisition offer, Jobs told him that Dropbox was a feature, not a product, and that Apple would build competing functionality into its own operating system. Jobs followed through on that promise by launching iCloud in 2011. Despite the warning, Dropbox went on to reach a peak valuation of over $12 billion at its IPO in 2018, proving that sometimes a feature executed exceptionally well can indeed become a massive standalone business.
