Data backup is the process of regularly creating copies of your application's database, file storage, configuration, and other critical data so it can be restored if the original is lost, corrupted, or compromised. Recovery testing is the equally important practice of actually restoring from those backups on a regular schedule to verify they work. A backup strategy defines what gets backed up, how often (hourly, daily, weekly), how long backups are retained, and where they are stored. Modern database platforms like Neon and Supabase provide automated point-in-time recovery, which continuously saves transaction logs so you can restore your database to any second in time, not just to the last backup snapshot. Backups should be stored in a geographically separate location from your primary data, encrypted both in transit and at rest, and access-restricted so that a compromised server cannot delete the backups too.
Backups are your insurance policy against every category of data loss: ransomware attacks, accidental deletion, database corruption, infrastructure failures, natural disasters, and malicious insiders. Without tested backups, any of these events becomes an extinction-level threat to your business. But having backups is only half the equation, untested backups are barely better than no backups at all. Organizations routinely discover during an actual crisis that their backups are corrupted, incomplete, or incompatible with their current system. Recovery testing on a regular schedule (monthly or quarterly) ensures that when disaster strikes, you know exactly how long restoration takes, the data is complete, and the process actually works. For applications that generate revenue, a tested backup strategy is the difference between "we will be back online in two hours" and "we lost everything."
In 2017, GitLab suffered a major database incident when an engineer accidentally deleted 300GB of production data during a maintenance operation. When the team attempted to restore from backups, they discovered that five different backup and replication methods had all been failing silently. The only backup that partially worked was a manual snapshot taken six hours earlier, resulting in the permanent loss of six hours of user data including issues, merge requests, and comments. GitLab live-streamed their recovery effort in a move of radical transparency that became a cautionary tale for the entire industry. In the ransomware space, the 2021 attack on the Irish Health Service Executive encrypted systems across the country's entire public healthcare system. Hospitals that had tested offline backups recovered in days. Those without them faced months of disruption, with some services not fully restored for over four months. The Colonial Pipeline attack, which disrupted fuel supply across the US East Coast, was ultimately resolved by paying a $4.4 million ransom because the company's backup restoration process was too slow to meet the crisis timeline.
